The expansion of a Nelson-based deer velvet company into the Australian market is a significant win for the region, its directors say.
Nelson producer and processor Mountain Red is about to begin exporting to Australia, after having its product licensed by that country’s Therapeutic Goods Administration.
Mountain Red chief executive Karen Morley said the licence meant the company’s range of therapeutic products could be distributed in Australia and be prescribed by general practitioners practising integrated medicine.
While Australia had its own deer velvet industry, only Mountain Red’s velvet was licensed by the TGA, she said. The company has also secured a distribution deal with Australia’s third-largest distributor.
Mountain Red has taken a different approach to the market, opting not to export frozen whole stick velvet like many others. Instead, it exports value-added finished product.
